FAQ

WHAT IS CHINESE / ORIENTAL MEDICINE?

Oriental Medicine encompasses acupuncture, herbal therapy, food therapy, cupping, moxabustion,

gua sha, electrical stimulation, and tui-na.  Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture is a complete

healthcare system that has been in practice for 4,000 years.  Today, acupuncture is receiving wide

acceptance as a respected, valid and effective form of healthcare.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Fine sterile needles are placed at specific acupuncture points on the body.   This activates the body’s Qi

and promotes natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity and physical and emotional

health.  It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

WHAT IS QI AND HOW DOES IT HEAL THE BODY?

At the core of this ancient medicine is the philosophy that Qi (pronounced “chee”) or vital energy, flows

throughout the body in 14 main meridian pathways.  Qi helps to animate the body and protect it from

illness, pain and disease.  A person’s health is influenced by the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.

When Qi flows freely throughout the body, one enjoys good physical, mental and emotional well-being.

An obstruction of Qi anywhere in the body is like a dam, can hinder the distribution of the nourishment

that the body requires to function optimally.

WHAT CAN AFFECT QI?

Many things influence the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.  Physical and emotional trauma, stress,

lack of exercise, overexertion, seasonal changes, diet, accidents or excessive activity can lead to a blockage

or imbalance of Qi.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL YOU NEED?

The number of treatments and frequency required initially will vary by individual depending on age,

overall health and how acute or chronic your issue is.  As you get better, you move into a maintenance

and prevention plan.  Oriental Medicine is about staying healthy and not just seeing the Doctor when

you are sick.  The goal of Oriental Medicine is being healthy for a lifetime and health always takes

time, energy and investment.  You only have one body to work with in your lifetime, so take care of it.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

No!  The needles are very, very fine, about the thickness of a human hair.  The most common feeling

is that of a heavy sensation as the needle goes in, but is rarely painful.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

Yes.  By law, we use high quality sterile disposable needles.  Usually the needles are inserted in a very

shallow manner, so it is safe and painless.
